Naming and Symbol researches

Last term we had a course called "Business for design" and we learned how to name a business. While searching I found some naming tips which is useful for my major project too.
So what makes a good name? There are five main characteristics:
  1. It’s easy to remember
  2. It’s easy to spell and requires no explanation
  3. It describes your business category
  4. It describes your benefit
  5. It describes your difference
Some good company names;
  • PayPal
  • Best Buy
  • QuickBooks
Some more names that I add my list;
Longevity
Rebellious
Veggie Tale
GreenYummy
Pasture
Green Gruel
Veggie Hunt
Herbivorous
Herbal
Grassland
Grassy
Fairly
Baa baa
Green belt
Healthy veggie
Vegetable kingdom

Vegetarian Symbols which done before;
Some vegetarian symbols which I collected to see what is done before, so that I will design a different logo or symbol. I realized that all symbols are nearly same. They all use the ''V'' letter with a leaf and with green color. Here they are;

CNN reports all going vegan

Here’s a great clip from none other than CNN, reporting about going vegan and how good it actually is for humans, animals and the planet.

Children and typography researches

Why am I trying to design a typeface which is energetic colorful and simple?
Here are some of my researches that helped me to decide this kind of typeface.

''Most children learn to read going letter-by-letter, learning which sounds go with which shapes until they can blend the sounds together to form words. This is why new readers proceed slowly and sometimes struggle with pronunciation and syllable stress. The efforts of new readers can be supported by making sure their texts use inviting, easy-to-read typefaces, set in the most readable way. Text legibility When selecting a typeface for a children’s text, look for a warm, friendly design with simple, generous letter shapes. The counters (the enclosed shapes within characters) should be rounded and open, not angular or rectangular. Avoid non-traditional letterforms. A good example of a typeface with these attributes is Sassoon Primary, designed specifically for children.

Either sans or serif designs can be used as long as they avoid any extremes that could impair readability. For example:

* Don’t use condensed or expanded typefaces, which make character recognition more difficult
* Select a book or medium weight; stay away from hairline or very bold weights
* If you plan to use italics, make sure they too are easy-to-read, and not overly condensed or stylized

Both the serifed Bembo Schoolbook and Plantin Schoolbook, as well as Gill Schoolbook, a sans serif style, have been designed for children and exemplify the principles above.

Headlines and Titles
Headline or title type gives you the opportunity to be more playful in style, color and layout, since there are fewer words to read. Decorated typestyles, lots of color, and curved and jumping baselines can all be used to attract and entertain the young reader. Keeping it light and fun is the key to keeping a young reader interested and turning pages.
This is my solution!! ''

Infant characters

Most children in our study were well aware that there were different forms of a and g, and some even made the point that single storey a's and g's are what we write and double-storey a's and g's are what we read. Some commented favourably about what they perceived as the 'normal' g used in Gill Schoolbook.
Other thought that double-storey a's and g's were 'harder' than single-storey a's and g's, but this did not affect their reading performance. If infant characters are used it is important that there is clear differentiation between charactes such as o, a and g. This is the case in Gill Educational, for example, but not in Avant Garde Gothic or Helvetica. Script and informal typefaces A second set of tests compared Century and Gill with two informal-looking typefaces, Sassoon and Flora. The children noticed differences in features of individual letters, in the qualities of the setting as a whole, such as size and texture.
We also asked children about their views on five additional typefaces presented in double-spread:
* Comic Sans * French Script * Fabula * Lucida Handwriting * Sand

Type Trys

After checking some typography books I tried to create a different type just for my main topics. Colorful, attractive and energetic. I used pink foams, which are made of sticky and soft plastic and write with them. Here some of them;

Some design concept developments

After a deep research I have some ideas for my project. I collect some stuff from Sainsbury's and packages to see what is done before about healthy food for children. I find out some similar designs such as Sainsbury's and Vegetarian Society's typefaces. They use nearly the same typeface for children products. After I realize that I thought that I might try to do a new typeface to use for my main topics. I want to show you the similar type faces..

As you see they use similar typefaces. Yes it is colorful and energetic but as a designer I have to find a different solution, simple solution, to impress children.

In addition to these I decided to do a Vegetarian starter kit.
Why I reached this solution?
Because according to my brief I need to inform people while explaining ; why being vegetarian is healthier and more green. When I was searching, I find out some vegetarian kits. And I think it is a nice way to inform children while giving some enjoyable receipts that children can prepare by their own selves. I saw the work that vegetarian society done before. They give responsibilities to children and children are happy when they get responsibilities.(you can see the old post to see the survey that children done). I am sure they will keen on being vegetarian. Mostly they want to be different and choose a veggie life. The starter kit must contain how to start a vegetarian life and some informations such as feeding values. The kits which I found are mostly contain some food photographs and lots of texts. Again I have to find a different design for the kit. Simple and some good vectors to inform people instead of using to much text. (some signs can be used). I found a vegetarian kit which has a nice concept but not a good design, in my opinion.. (Vegetarian kits exist but I will do it in a different way).

Yesterday on the television I watched the program called Ready Steady Cook. While they were cooking on tv the spiker was chatting with one of the audiences. The women asked about children which do not eat vegetables. and mentioned that most of the children do not eat vegetable. She wanted to ask the chief about this and i record it as a reference. Here it is.

One more thing that I saw on newspaper was really weird and I cut it from newspaper. Burger King sells a burger which is really expensive. Why expensive, dont have any idea..

NAMING and LOGO
For my project I need to do a logo-logotype and I need to find a name. I found some names and still working on them. While searching for name, sometimes I find Turkish names and check dictionary to translate them in English. Or, I use some of my researches for naming. Some of the names have a positive meaning in Turkish but have negative meaning in English. I realized them while working with my tutor Mr. Smith, we laughed and enjoyed while trying to choose a name which are translated from Turkish to English :) Here are some names that I found just for now:
Greenland
Soybean
Bambooo
Green chef
Wild veggies
Savage
Veggie attack
Lactos
Vegans
Meet free
Animal free
Go Veg
Tofu
Kitchen garden
Vegetate :) this has a positive meaning in Turkish but negative meaning in English (my tutor Mr.Smith mention that kindly :))
Mow
Graze
Green fodder
Double protein
Healthy and tasty

I will find out more names..

And some nice ads which I would like to share with you;

Yes, if we are human, we need to sharpen our teeth. Because human is not able to eat animal physically if it is uncooked. We do not have sharp teeth to eat animal meat. This is weird, we can cook and eat. Animals eat an other animal to stay alive in the nature. This is natural.

See the muscles of cow. Isn't it like a horse?Healthy. Remember horse do not eat meat :)

Violence!!!! This is more about fashion! If you call it as a fashion! They kill animals while hitting to head with something (I think it is something like wood, I did not searched the material which they use to kill animals or I did not wanted to learn what it is). It has high quality when they are killed by hitting. Their muscles are not tight when they killed like that. But when they are totally dead(cut by people), the fur coat will be cheap !!!!! I am so sorry but both way is bullshit.

You can see the violence what people do at:

This is the site which I checked before starting my major project..
